2005 Indonesia Earthquake


A major Earthquake hit the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia on March 28, 2005. The Sumatra earthquake of 2005 was proven to be the 2nd most powerful earthquake since 1965 with a terrifying magnitude of 8.7. The earthquake occured due to subduction forcing the Indo-Australian Plate to move under the Eurasian Plate. Approximately 1,300 people were killed and hundred more injured due to this massive earthquake. The earthquake lasted about 2 minutes total and the following 24 hours included 8 major aftershocks, ranging between 5.5 and 6.0. The earthquake was strongly felt by Indonesia's neighbouring countries, Malaysia and Thailand.
