earthquake in Peru

This earthquake happened in Peru on August 16 2007 the epicenter was 90 miles south east of Lima and the focus point was 25 miles below that. It was estimated to be a magnitude of 7.7 to 7.9.
This earthquake was caused by the Nazca plate subducting under the South American plate.
The effects of this earthquake on the people of the area were devastating since it is a poorer country the buildings were not built very well in some towns. In one town a cathedral was destroyed with some 300 people inside many people were left homeless. This earthquake clamed 437 peoples lives and injured 1350 more, it was very shocking to come home and see the extent of the damages from surrounding towns since I hade a first hand look at some of the damages I was in Peru when it happened and experienced some of the aftershocks in the city of Lima.
