Southern Sumatra, Indonesian earthquake
This earthquake happened at 4.520°S, 101.374°E with an 8.5 magnitude on the richtor scale. The world’s most powerful tremor in 2007, hit Southern Sumatra in Indonesia on September 12th, 2007. A second powerful earthquake of the intensity of 7.8 had hit the same area on the 13th of September. This had prompted countries around the Indian Ocean to issue a series of tsunami alerts and to evacuate people from coastal areas to areas further inland. The epicenter of this second earthquake was about 185 kilometers south-east of the city of Padang. In Padang, many buildings that were weakened in the first tremor were completely destroyed.
