Acid rain weakens trees by damaging their leaves, limiting nutrients to the roots, or poisoning them with toxic substances released from the soil. Acid rain can trigger the release of toxic substances into the soil such as aluminium. Forests in mountainous regions will recieve additional acid from the acidic fogs and clouds that surround them.
