This is a forest in Papua New Guinea that has been clearcut. It is a tropical Rainforest, and because of that it has a very high level of biodiversity.
It is very tempting for logging companies to simply clearcut Tropical Rainforest because of the fact that it takes less time than searching for individual trees. However, clearcutting is much worse for the forests, for biodiversity, and it releases a lot more CO2 into the atmosphere.
One solution to mismanagement is Selective Cutting, where the loggers instead of demolishing entire forests go in and search for specific trees of the type they want. This dramatically reduces the amount of trees cut down and ecological damage done.
