Austrailian Bushfires
This year, Australia experienced its worst bushfire season to date. The fires occured in the Southern Australia state of Victoria, where over 700 homes were destroyed and the death toll rose to 173 people. Thousands more were displaced and a total of 414 people were severely injured/burned. As many as 400 individual fires were repoted on the seventh of February, 2009. This date is now referred to as "Black Saturday." Over 1.1 million acres of land was burned due to these fires.
